Ice machines are a wonderful convenience for a home and a necessity in many businesses including hotels, bars, restaurants, and hospitals.
As useful as they are, though, like all machines, they eventually fail: pumps fail, rubber ages, gaskets crack. And when something like that happens, the water to the ice machine doesn’t shut off. It keeps going and going and going…and if no one is there, you face a potential disaster.
Some machines can put out nearly 250 lbs. of ice in 24 hours – that’s a lot of water to spill out.
It’s not as bad if your floor is tiled like virtually all hospitals are. But on a wood floor, it’s a real problem, and if it’s a laminate floor, you’re going to be replacing it. The water will simply destroy the composite material underneath.
Depending on your situation, the water can wreck wood floors, soak the bottoms of walls, ruin electronics and leave the distinct potential for mold and mildew and the attendant problems they cause. Who needs that?
